Is my Manuel Rodriguez guitar made out of solid wood?
I have a MODEL E Manuel Rodriguez guitar that cost me about $2,000. However, I do not know if the back and sides are SOLID indian rosewood, but I do know the spruce is. Does anyone know if the back and sides are solid indian rose wood?
The back might be, but I doubt if the sides are.
The sides are usually made of thin plies of wood glued together - due to the shape of the sides, it is easier to bend thin sheets of wood (especially a hard wood like rosewood) than one thick one. The sides are very rarely carved out of a solid block as well.
If you really want to know, look at the grain of the wood. If it seems to be consistent (ie it looks the same) over the entire length of the sides, it is most likely not solid.
The sides and back do very little for your sound, so laminated wood isn't a bad thing. In fact, it can make the wood stronger and thereby help your sustain.
